Philodendron sp. 'Holtonianum' (ined.)

An undescribed species from the eastern Andean foothills of Ecuador, circulating in the collector trade under the provisional name 'holtonianum' pending formal botanical description — a name not yet accepted in published nomenclature but consistently applied within nursery and collector circles to a plant with a very specific and immediately distinctive character. Previously considered a form of Philodendron tripartitum, it is now recognized as a separate entity defined above all by one of the most dramatic heteroblastic leaf transformations in the genus: juvenile plants produce very narrow, elongated, strap-shaped leaves with no lobing whatsoever — simple, linear, and entire — that give no hint of what is coming. As the plant climbs and matures, each successive leaf begins to develop increasingly defined lateral lobes flanking the central lobe, progressively widening and deepening with each new leaf until the plant arrives at its full tri-lobed, deeply tripartite mature form — broad, boldly three-sectioned leaves with the two lateral lobes extending outward from a prominent central section. The progression from strap leaf to fully tri-lobed mature form can take considerable time and vertical growth, making a moss pole not merely a care recommendation but a prerequisite for the plant ever showing its defining character. Leaf texture throughout is thinly coriaceous — thin leathery and flexible rather than stiff — with a clean dark green glossy surface and clear venation. Mature leaves on well-grown climbing plants can reach approximately three feet in length, making this a substantial and architecturally impressive specimen at maturity.

A tall moss pole or climbing support is essential — the trilobed mature leaf form that defines the species will not develop without vertical climbing, and the taller the plant climbs, the more dramatically lobed and proportionally large each successive leaf becomes. Provide bright indirect light to support the most vigorous growth and the fastest progression through the juvenile-to-mature leaf transition. Water when the top 1-2" of medium approaches dryness in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Humidity of 60-70% supports healthy growth, though the plant is reported to be reasonably adaptable. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

For tough chewers
This is great for my large puppy. It has taken a beating, and I trim off any hanging or loose pieces of rubber. It has survived the test of time.

We call it the brick.
Great chew toy. Not really made for playing fetch. It’s large and very heavy. Good construction.

Indestructible but hard to get treats out
We have a power chewer and have had the black Kong products for a long time. I opted to try this new design however, the shape makes it difficult for our dog to reach the treat. We have stopped using it since I had to keep digging the treat out for her. : ) The black Kong shaped like a pear works much better for her. Giving this 3 stars overall because she can't really use it well.
